Personal and Child Safety Tips
Any of us may be crime victims. As a former law enforcement officer, unless I practice safety, I too may be a victim of a crime. The most common crimes involve burglary and theft. THUGS enjoy taking what you and I work so hard to obtain. It becomes almost a game to them on seeing what each person has for the taking. Be aware that gang members get credits “points” on their specific crimes. (The more points they get, the greater respect they get in their gang and they are able to move up the ladder in their organization). Reports of child abductions and assaults create fear among citizens of the United States. Below are some basic safety tips to protect yourself and your children.
Be prepared and reduce your family’s risk of being victims of crime. Some of the tips below were obtained from the Wisconsin Police Department.
- Tips on Personal Safety:
- Keep your home and auto doors locked at all times.
- Never open your door to a stranger. Use your peephole to see who is at the door before you open it. Ask for identification before allowing a meter reader or repair person into your home. You can even be safer by obtaining one of our camera systems w/ audio.
- Keep your car auto doors locked while you are driving and while the car is parked.
- Don’t give your name, address, charge card number or Social Security number to an unknown caller. Never give your name or address on your message machine. Say something like: "I’m sorry we are unable to take your call now. Please leave a message at the tone."
- Never surprise a burglar. If you see something that makes you think your home may have been robbed, do not go in. Go to a safe place and call the police. The burglar may still be around. It doesn’t matter whether you carry a handgun, a stungun, or both for protection, let the police do their job.
- Don’t flash large amounts of cash or jewelry in public. If you want to out-smart the criminals, then wear Conceal Wear and put your valuables in this great invention.
- Be extra careful in areas with high crime rates, especially at night. Always carry protection with you!
- If you exercise, then do that during daylight hours. Limit your outside activity to daylight hours, if possible. Carry some form of personal protection with you when you jog or walk, such as the Jogger.
- Tips to Protect Your Children from Crime:
- Never leave small children alone in a public place. Always use the In-Reach Child Monitoring device to help keep track of where the small children are located at the park, in the store, or wherever. Have young children walk to school with an older brother, sister or friend. Don’t allow young children to roam the neighborhood, trick or treat, or sell things door-to-door without an adult.
- When children do walk to a certain location, then teach them to stay on a certain path. That path should be well traveled and have “NO” secluded sections to it. Walking a longer “safe” path is better than no arriving to a destination.
- Teach children not to answer the door if they are alone. Teach children not to answer a door period, if they don’t know the person at the door or they haven’t gotten permission from you to answer the door.
- Teach children telephone safety. Children who are alone should tell callers that their parents are unable to come to the telephone. Warn them not to give their name or address to an unknown caller.
- Talk to children about crime and safety. Warn them not to talk to strangers. Remind them not to ever enter a car or home of a stranger. Teach children to do anything that keeps someone from getting them into a car or home of a stranger. Consider putting a panic alarm on your child and teach them that it is only for an emergency.
- Teach children how to use 911 or another emergency telephone number. Leave several telephone numbers so that babysitters can reach someone in an emergency.
- Teach children their home telephone number, your cell phone number, and their address.
- Teach children the truth! Some people are really bad and that is why they have to listen and obey your safety teachings.
